Banan (バナン, Banan), also known as the Second City Banan (第二都市バナン, Daini Toshi Banan), is one of the ten major cities of Kararagi.

Information[]

Banan is roughly located in the center of the Kararagi City-States. Due to its location, it receives an influx of many of Kararagi's diverse cultural aspects. Like the other cities in Kararagi, the architecture is reminiscent of early-modern Japan, and the streets contain a mixture of culture not seen in any other country.

History[]

Before becoming part of the Kararagi City-States, Banan was a small nation of its own. According to legend, Hoshin brought the nation to ruin. He was purported to have given Banan the choice to surrender or face an all-out attack, thus creating the anecdote “Hoshin was Banan’s sunset”.[1]

The city of Banan was home to the Chuden Company until its headquarters were moved to the Third City Ivada, and it became the Hoshin Company.

Later, shortly after the events of the Vollachia Empire’s Great Disaster, the Slasher Zarestia attacked Banan with a massive windstorm, destroying half the town while searching for the thief who stole her Light Sphere, confronting Ricardo in the process. This incident is dubbed the Shinigami Disaster. Fortunately, none of the residents were killed, and thanks to Ricardo's decision to endure her attacks to try and reason with Zarestia, she stopped her windstorm.

Locations[]

  • Magoji Palace (マゴージ御殿): The so-called Magoji Palace is a large residence at the north side of Banan owned by Riften Magoji. It was built on a vast spread of land and has multiple tatami rooms.
  • Destitute Quarter (極貧街): The destitute quarter of Banan is a populated area at the back of the city. Its residents, known as hyenas, live in extreme poverty. Slave traders frequently capture hyenas from the quarter, but despite Banan's city laws, their enslavement is overlooked.[2]
  • Disposal Site: The disposal site in Banan, commonly known as the “trash heap”, is an area where dirt and scrap is buried underground. As most people prefer staying away from the area, it is an optimal hideout for traffickers to utilize.[3]
  • Elementary School: A school for children that teaches arithmetic, etiquette, and general education.
  • Bathhouse: A public bathhouse with a simple structure. It has a space like a lounge at its entrance. The bathhouse’s wide bathtubs are heated by the use of magic stones.
  • Employment Agency: An employment agency that the city of Banan officially recognizes. It is run by Crane Donahue.
  • Park: A public park dotted with playgrounds. It lies in a corner of Banan.
  • Unnamed Tavern: A tavern at the western end of Banan. When Anastasia Hoshin was younger, she worked there as a waitress until she was hired by Chuden Agri.

  1. “‘Hoshin was Banan’s sunset’ refers to an anecdote about the legendary trader Hoshin bringing the small nation of Banan to ruin—It refers to giving the opponent two choices: surrender or face all-out attack.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 11, Chapter 5, Section 4.
  2. Back when Anastasia used to live in the destitute quarter, nearly being caught by slave traders was not uncommon. Even considering Banan's city laws, the enslavement of hyenas in the destitute quarter was overlooked. Re:Zero Tanpenshuu Volume 3, Kararagi Girl Meets Cats, Section 6.
  3. The “trash heap” was a common name for the disposal site meant for burying dirt and scrap under the ground. Because it was a place people preferred not to approach, nor to linger around for long, it was the most optimal choice as a hideout for traffickers.
