The Destruction of Chaosflame is an event that took place roughly one year and six months after the arrival of Natsuki Subaru into the world. Taking place halfway through Arc 7, Subaru and company came to the Demon City of Chaosflame in an effort to recruit Yorna Mishigure into Abel’s faction, and in turn, gain the support of Priscilla Barielle.
Having arrived in the city, they confronted Yorna in her Crimson Lapis Castle, where they came face to face with the leader of the opposing side of the war, Chisha Gold, taking the form of his former emperor. This led to a successful declaration of war and the potential for Yorna’s assistance. However, due to the schemes of Tanza and Olbart Dunkelkenn, numerous battles broke out across the city, leading to a tremendous fight between two Divine Generals.
Things took a tremendous turn when Subaru, who had been infantilized by the Vicious Old Man, was found by the Witch of Envy, who had lost him after their connection was severed, leading to her shadow spilling out of his body and consuming the city. With both sides, alongside the citizens of the city, working together, they successfully managed to repel the shadow, at the cost of the entire city, and with both Subaru and Tanza being flung far away.
Background[]
Having weathered through the Fall of Guaral, Abel made the decision to head to Chaosflame in an effort to bring one of the most unique of the Divine Generals to their side: Yorna Mishigure. By doing so, they intended to bring Priscilla, who had arrived during the Fall, to their side and gain her support. With a team composed of Abel, Subaru (posing as Natsumi Schwartz), Medium O'Connell, Al, and Taritta Shudrak, they left for the Demon City. Later, they realized that Rui had also snuck aboard the carriage they were on. Unable to turn back, she was taken along with them.
Meeting in the Crimson Lapis Castle[]
Shortly after arriving in Chaosflame, the group decided to stay at an inn. After making preparations, Abel handed Subaru a letter meant for Yorna. Deciding that Subaru, Medium, and Al would go to deliver it, Abel remained in the inn with Rui and Taritta. Shortly after arriving at the Crimson Lapis Castle, they were led by Yorna’s assistant, Tanza, to an open space, where Abel’s enemies laid in wait. Also seeking an audience with Yorna were Abel’s lookalike, Divine General Olbart Dunkelkenn, General Second-Class Kafma Irulux, and the Stargazer Ubilk, much to the shock of the others.
Soon after, the two groups were met by Yorna. With Kafma complaining for the sakes of both parties, Yorna did not care. Abel’s lookalike, Chisha, pleaded his case, intending to keep her from joining the fight. However, Yorna soon after revealed the intentions of Subaru’s group, much to the irritation of Kafma. Olbart spoke up to calm him for a moment, leading to Al speaking up in an attempt to use his “reward” from the events in Ginunhive approximately a decade ago to finish his business with Yorna. This allowed Subaru to hand the letter to Yorna, who promised that she would read it if they successfully escaped the Crimson Lapis Castle. With this in mind, Subaru turned around and declared war against Chisha.

This led to Kafma’s attempt to kill the group, though thanks to Al, they managed to survive. Similarly, Olbart also made his move, yet he was also thwarted by Al. With a hole in the wall nearby, the group attempted to jump out of it, though not before Olbart managed to strike them with a strange technique. After Subaru and Medium jumped, Al soon jumped with them, and they landed in hay in the ground beneath them. With this, they successfully escaped, and Tanza assured them that Yorna would make sure that nobody would attack them while they were in Chaosflame.
At the same time, Yorna stated as much to Chisha’s group. Some time later, Subaru’s group returned to the inn. They reported their results to Abel, and afterwards, though Rui was making a fuss about them, they went to bed. As they slept, Olbart’s technique finally sunk in, turning the three into children.
Chaos in Chaosflame[]
At some point, Tanza met with Chisha’s group, and with the assistance of Olbart, she made a scheme to prevent Subaru’s group from having Yorna take part in the upcoming war.
After awakening, Subaru, Al, and Medium found themselves in their young bodies, much to the frustration and bewilderment of Abel and Taritta. Shortly after, Tanza arrived at their inn, wanting to meet Abel and the group that had come to the castle the day prior. Though surprised at Subaru’s appearance, Tanza soon left after confirming they would make an appearance, and she managed to sneak into Chisha’s inn without being spotted. Shortly after, however, Olbart made his presence known to the group. Though surprised that Subaru was a guy, he otherwise did not care, and he began negotiating with the group. As they did, Subaru, who had been through a loop already, accurately stated his intention of wishing to kill the emperor for posthumous fame. Slightly agitated by this, he ultimately decided to play a game with the group. At first proposing tag, he decided to play hide and seek with the group to see if they were worth picking a fight with the emperor.
After giving the group a riddle, he left, leaving the group to go along with his game. After leaving their room, they quickly found Olbart, who made his first hiding spot the start. Impressed, Olbart left for his next hiding spot, leaving behind the next clue. However, Subaru, who had gone through yet another loop, was reluctant to go outside, as their lives were in danger. Looking outside, the group found numerous horned demi-humans blocking their path. Ordering Taritta to hold the group off, everyone else left and hid in the alleyways.
In trying to determine exactly who their enemies were, Subaru felt himself pushed and ran out to the crowd, where he was flung into the sky by a child. After being saved, they found themselves surrounded by people who wanted to know what happened to Tanza. With Subaru in danger, Rui jumped in the way of an attack and was left injured beneath a broken stall. Meanwhile, Medium was struggling to hold off the citizens, and Al was left terrified and laying on the ground, having lost his Authority. Despite this, Rui awakened her skills again and made quick work of the attacking citizens. With the attack over, Subaru was questioned over Rui’s identity, which he responded with the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. With Medium afraid, Al enraged, and Abel declaring the empire’s statute on Witch Cultists, Subaru and Rui ran away.
Deciding to leave them for later, Abel made his way towards Chisha’s inn, where he determined Tanza would be. Arriving there, Tanza revealed what she had planned and why, and though she was willing to take punishment for it, neither Chisha nor Abel thought to do so.
Meanwhile, as Subaru and Rui made their way through town, handling numerous citizens along the way, they were assisted by Ubilk, allowing the other citizens to move on by. With further assistance from the Stargazer, they determined Olbart’s next hiding spot, and the proceeded towards the Crimson Lapis Castle. Teleporting inside with Rui’s Leaper, they ran into Yorna, who had noticed them prior. With Subaru noticing her fondness for children, he decided to ask her for help regarding Olbart.
The Flamboyant versus The Vicious Old Man[]

After telling Yorna part of their story, they made their way to the roof, where Olbart was waiting. Yorna scolded the old man for his behavior, and shortly after, Subaru attempted to negotiate with him to put a stop to the game. However, this only managed to anger the old man, and Yorna attacked him for refusing a child’s request. This led to an all-out battle between Yorna and Olbart above the Crimson Lapis Castle. Unable to withstand the force of the battle, Subaru and Rui had jumped somewhere stable enough to hold them, and they watched as the battle unfolded.
Yorna managed to hold off Olbart with her strength and the area around them, utilizing her Soul Marriage Technique to push Olbart into using up his tricks. Despite this, Olbart eventually brought out a set of compressed fire stone bombs, intending to force Yorna into defending the town around them. Due to this, Subaru was forced into his “ten seconds of despair.” He eventually overcame this, and with Rui’s help, they teleported above Olbart and landed on top of him. Though he was irritated with this, when Subaru claimed he beat him in his game of tag, Olbart relented, and the fight concluded.
In the castle below, the group spoke for a time, with Subaru and Yorna both speaking in contempt. Because he won the game, Olbart then attempted to return Subaru’s body to normal. However, in the moment, the Witch of Envy “found” Subaru.
The Overflowing Shadow[]
With his arm devoured by the shadow pouring out of Subaru’s body, Olbart was forced to retreat. Shortly after, the shadow exploded outward, forcing everyone to flee. It took little time for the shadow to burst out from the castle and attempt to swallow it. Despite Rui’s worry for Subaru, Yorna used her powers to attack the shadow and force it to recede, being forced to dodge as numerous shadow hands stretched out for her and Rui. Meanwhile, those at the inn Chisha was using saw the shadow take over the castle. Though most were confused by its appearance, Al screamed, recognizing the shadow and asking why she appeared here. Despite this, Chisha and Abel quickly took charge and decided to prepare to fight back.
Elsewhere, Taritta, who had finally managed to push back her attackers, confronted Ubilk, who called her by the degrading name she was once called. Though confused by how he knew, once he revealed himself as Stargazer, Taritta threatened him. That said, when the shadow appeared, Taritta was confused by its appearance, and Ubilk stated that this was a problem for the Kingdom and was out of his jurisdiction.
With Yorna struggling to hold it back, she decided to use the consumed Crimson Lapis Castle to attack the shadow, and she promptly blew it up. Though she caused some damage, she failed to completely push it back, and it quickly got back to consuming the city. The nearby citizens also began throwing rubble at it. Soon, reinforcements arrived in the form of Kafma, helping to protect the citizens and push back the shadow. On a nearby building, Abel stood observing the fight with Medium by his side, and Yorna and Rui made their way his direction. When Rui tried to tell him that Subaru was in the shadow, he showed no concern, and she struck him for it. With Rui teleporting away to attack the shadow, Abel and Yorna started talking about this Great Disaster. After revealing his identity to her, the two discussed the shadow. Noticing that the shadow was reaching out to those Subaru was connected to while ignoring those he didn’t, Abel decided that he would be safe as Subaru would never reach out to him. Yorna then returned to the battle.
Elsewhere, Olbart spoke with Al, and after a short conversation, Al demanded Olbart return his body to normal so he could regain his Authority. Soon after, Taritta arrived at Abel’s location, referring to the shadow as the Great Disaster. With Abel questioning her about her knowledge and the commandment she was given and revealing that Subaru was at the center of the shadow, he revealed that she was also requested to take the emperor’s life to stop the Great Disaster. However, when they came to the conclusion that this disaster was not what, Abel turned to fight it. Al soon appeared in his grown body and resolved to fight. With them going to fight, they left Taritta to ponder what she was supposed to do.

As everyone struggled to hold off the shadow, Al appeared and began giving out orders, allowing everyone to avoid being struck by the shadow. That said, they were unable to stop the shadow’s creeping, and in the end, they had to make the decision to completely retreat so that Yorna could blow up the town to push the shadow back. Though frustrated at having to do so, Al knocked out Rui so that she wouldn’t get hurt, and everyone retreated. Soon after, Yorna blew up the entirety of Chaosflame and dealt significant damage to the shadow. However, this wasn’t enough, leading to Tanza to use herself to push back the remnants of the shadow. Though Yorna tried to stop her, Taritta fired an arrow into her leg to prevent this, and with Tanza entering the shadow, she triggered the final explosion to finally push the shadow back.
Aftermath[]
Having helped all that he needed to, Kafma quickly returned to Chisha’s side, who had already made his escape with Ubilk and Olbart. With Chaosflame destroyed, though everyone survived the ordeal, the citizens no longer had a home to return to. Realizing this, Abel quickly took advantage of their plight and spoke with Yorna, telling her to assist him. Though she was angered by his indifference, he pointed out that the citizens needed somewhere to go, and at present, Guaral was their best option. Similarly, Yorna would fight to defend them, and she would have to join his side to do so.
Elsewhere, while Al, Taritta, and Medium were overlooking the devastation, Rui was digging at the ground, desperately trying to find Subaru. Abel appeared shortly after and chided her, stating that her actions were pointless, angering both Rui and Medium. After discussing what would happen from that point forward, they talked about Subaru. Though Rui and Medium were hopeful that he was alive and Taritta doubted it, Al claimed that he was indeed alive, as the world had not ended. Though taking it as an emotional response, Abel claimed that he believed Subaru was alive, as he likely had yet another role to play. With this in mind, Abel decided to spread rumors of a “black-haired crown prince” being behind the rebellion. This would both incite the country to start rising up and force the government to capture Subaru alive if they found him. Afterward, everyone made their way to Guaral.
Meanwhile, Subaru and Tanza washed ashore on Ginunhive on the other side of the country, where the met the infantilized Cecilus Segmunt.
