The Enchanted Swords (魔剣, Maken) are a set of ten magic swords of unparalleled power.
Information[]
Existing for centuries, all ten Enchanted Swords are of unspecified origin. Likewise, their creator or respective creators are unknown. The magic swords and their powers are unmatched, wielding strength analogous to the top echelon of power,[1] and failing to be rivalled by any other blades. Although it is not certain if the following is true for all ten Enchanted Swords, some of them are said to surpass human knowledge,[2] as well as to have been forged with reason foreign to the world.[3]
Each Enchanted Sword has unique effects of their own, as well as conditions determining who can use them or compensation in exchange for employing their abilities. They call for blood and death in order to fulfill their purpose as blades, which is considered the utmost necessity in handling and caring for Enchanted Swords.[4] Furthermore, the swords seemingly display wills of their own.

Dragon Sword Reid[]
The Dragon Sword Reid (龍剣レイド, Ryūken Reido) is an Enchanted Sword supposedly created by an unknown swordsmith out of the finest steel and bestowed with a Divine Protection by the Sword God itself,[5][6] and it is claimed to be the world's strongest sword,[7] also known for being the sharpest and most beautiful ever created. According to Reinhard van Astrea, even if the world met its end, the sword was forged in such a way that it would not be destroyed.[8] Likewise, its sheath, known as the Dragon Claw (龍爪, Ryūsō), named as such for its grooves which were said to have been created by the Divine Dragon Volcanica's claws, is just as indestructible as the sword, being capable of withstanding any form of damage, including from a source such as Regulus Corneas's Authority, which could essentially destroy anything.
The power of the Dragon Sword allows it to cut that which cannot be cut,[9] allowing it to ignore resistances and deal immensely powerful blows. Even the likes of Volcanica's scales, harder than diamonds, and halo, capable of defending against even the magic of Roswaal L. Mathers, are incapable of defending against a strike by this sword. It has also been implied to have the strength to practically rewrite the world when swung, as Reinhard was shown to do in one of the Witch of Greed's Trials. In that "alternate present", Reinhard used it to not only slay his enemy, but also to breathe life into the frozen wastes around him. However, whether this was a fantasy created by the trial or is something that is truly possible is unknown.
Despite its immense power, a special condition is needed to be met in order for it to be drawn: it can only be drawn against a worthy opponent. The exact requirements for what determine a worthy opponent are unknown. An opponent's level of power does not seem to be considered, as even when up against Regulus Corneas, easily one of the most powerful people in the series, the sword did not allow itself to be drawn, whereas when up against Theresia van Astrea, who is considerably weaker by comparison, it allowed itself to be drawn. Thus far, the sword has allowed itself to be drawn against both her and Cecilus Segmunt, both masters of the blade; Puck, an artificial spirit and one of the Four Great Spirits, albeit it was only drawn in Echidna's Trial; it has even been implied by Reinhard that he can draw it against a rather weak Authority wielder and Sage Candidate, Natsuki Subaru, and afterward, he even successfully drew it to destroy the orb he was sealed in.[10] Regardless of its vague conditions to draw it, it is said that once the Dragon Sword has been drawn, defeat is no longer an option.[11]
The Dragon Sword was gifted to the first Sword Saint, and for many years it was his weapon of choice. Legends say that that the Dragon Sword has slain Witches, Dragons, and the Oni God.[12] Likewise, according to the legends, in Reid's hands, he used the sword to slay countless Dragons with a single blow, and accordingly, the blade has drunk the blood of the thousands of Dragons it has butchered.[13] Although it is unknown how accurate the legends around it are, as Reid is said to have been responsible for driving Dragons to the brink of existence in his time, this particular legend is likely true. Following his death, the Dragon Sword wound up in the hands of House Astrea, and ever since, it has been handed down in the family to those who have received the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint successively for generations.
Yang Sword Vollachia[]
Priscilla wielding the Yang Sword.
The Yang Sword Vollachia (陽剣ヴォラキア, Yōken Vorakia) is the Enchanted Sword that is linked to the imperial family of the Sacred Vollachia Empire. According to Berstetz Fondalfon, only those who have the necessary qualities for the throne of Vollachia are able to wield the sword. Although it has yet to be seen in the hands of anyone outside of the imperial family, it is a fact that the sword does choose its own wielder, and those unworthy of it are burned to death by the sword. Likewise, those no longer worthy of wielding the sword meet the same fate. It is during the start of the Imperial Selection Ceremony in which the imperial siblings choose whether or not to determine their worth of wielding the blade. As such, there have been many imperial royals to have both been killed by and wield the sword. Having said that, it is possible to survive being burned by the sword. When an unworthy wielder, Stride Vollachia, attempted to draw it, he survived being entirely burned by having his arm severed from his body before he could burn to death.
The power of the Yang Sword is to cut and burn whatever the user wishes.[14] In the hands of Priscilla Barielle, she displayed its ability to pass through matter with ease while striking only her target when she used it to pass through a hostage in order to slash her enemy. She likewise displayed its ability to overwrite powerful flames with her own bright white flames, allowing her to essentially take control of her own battlefield. Likewise, other wielders, such as Vincent Vollachia, have been shown to use the sword to burn a person down to their very soul, even if after only managing to cut through a lock of his enemy's hair. Essentially, this means that being so much as grazed can be a fatal strike.
The sword also uses the sky as its sheath. By willing it, users can cause the sword to manifest from the very air around them, allowing them to draw it in virtually any space. Most wielders keep the sword sheathed due to the mana cost of wielding it. One of the Yang Sword's previous wielders, Eugard Vollachia, was able to take advantage of this unique sheathing process in melee combat. After throwing the sword to strike an opponent, he would sheath and unsheathe it to return it to his hand. He also used its sheathing technique to switch hands mid-combat regularly, allowing him to catch his opponents off guard.
Unlike most swords, the Yang Sword can manifest multiples of itself, allowing for it to have more than one wielder at a time. As a result, any member of the imperial family, so long as they had the qualifications, could wield the Yang Sword simultaneously. This being said, this makes each individual sword weaker, and the wielders cannot draw out the sword's fullest potential. In Priscilla's hands, she recognized that the sword would dim, effectively dulling its blade and preventing her from using it properly. It is unknown why this is, and likewise, it is unknown whether this has to do with there having been more than one wielder during the times she used it.
Fiend Sword Murasame[]
Cecilus wielding the Fiend Sword Murasame.
The Fiend Sword Murasame (邪剣ムラサメ, Jaken Murasame) is an Enchanted Sword currently wielded by Cecilus Segmunt, and it has cutting edge so mighty that crafting a sheath for it was riddled with complications.[15] Originally, the Fiend Sword was of a different shape. However, after Cecilus found it in the storage of the Crystal Palace, he commissioned Groovy Gumlet, a master blacksmith and curse weapons expert, to reforge into a katana. Though its killing power and its abilities were not diminished, it refuses to allow itself to be touched by Groovy out of hatred, snapping away from his hands and flying away if he approaches it too closely.[16][17]
Murasame has the ability to sever the perceived “point” that exists in everything, no matter the person, object, phenomenon, or concept.[18] This allows it to cut through things without a physical form, including curses and contracts.[19] Out of its grudge against Groovy, it has even used this ability on its own to sever its own scent to prevent itself from ever being hunted for by Groovy or others with an excellent sense of smell, rendering it impossible to be pursued by smell.[18][20] Even without this ability, it can still sever most things with ease. When wielded temporarily by Eugard Vollachia, he used its swings to fling long range slashes at his opponent, and even when it missed, it slashed through things long in the distance.
The sword has a very long and storied history, and according to Julius Juukulius, even when sheathed, Murasame emits extreme cruelty and bloodlust.[21] Due to it being an Enchanted Sword, it calls for blood and death to fulfill its purpose as a blade.[4] In other words, the owner of the Fiend Sword must use it as a killing tool rather often. It also needs suitable compensation in order to be wielded, something that would cost an average wielder their very life.[22] When used by Halibel, who was unfamiliar with wielding the Fiend Sword, a single swing drained much of his energy from him,[23] and with the energy it took, it gained its power.[24]
Dream Sword Masayume[]
Cecilus wielding the Dream Sword Masayume.
The Dream Sword Masayume (夢剣マサユメ, Muken Masayume) is an Enchanted Sword that is currently wielded by Cecilus that is said to bear incredible power.[25] Just like Murasame, Masayume has a long and storied past. Due to it being an Enchanted Sword, it requires sacrifice and blood in order to satisfy its hunger for violence. Were Masayume's owner in an altered shape, it would not be as unyielding in recognizing its owner as Murasame would be.[26] Likewise, Julius notes that, Masayume, even when sheathed, emits extreme cruelty and bloodlust.[21]
Masayume has the ability to grant its wielder's dreams, or the motivation for a wish they have to come true, in exchange for devouring them.[27][28] Given the nickname “A Dream Come True” (正夢, Masayume), before being acquired by Cecilus, it traded owners many times, devouring their dreams in the process, even when it could have found itself in the hands of a wielder that made it an ineffective dull blade.[29] However, a wielder who harbors an extraordinary yearning for their dreams can avoid the Dream Sword devouring their motivation, allowing them to utilize the blade to its full potential, which is what happened in Cecilus's case.[30][31]
It uses dreams as its sheath and can be accessed from a dream of any kind that its owner experiences.[32] The user does not have to be asleep to experience such dreams either; when infantilized, Cecilus witnessed a flashback in his mind in the midst of battle, and by taking hold of Masayume while seeing this flashback, he was able to manifest it in the real world. Masayume can also sever things in a manner similar but not identical to the Fiend Sword Murasame.[33] Though not shown flinging slashes around like Murasame, it has shown to be able to slash through things that most would be incapable of cutting through. When Cecilus used it to slash through Arakiya, whose power was unstable due to having devoured the entirety of Muspel, Cecilus used the sword to cut through this instability, allowing Arakiya's body to acclimate to the Great Spirit's power and not self-destruct.
Life Sword Zeam[]

The Life Sword Zeam (命剣ゼアム, Meiken Zeamu) is an Enchanted Sword. While it has not yet been introduced in the main story, in the non-canon Re:Zero Lost in Memories mobile game's exclusive Aganau IF story, Natsuki Subaru retrieves it from the home of a deceased noble known as Count Reeback, an eccentric man who liked to collect different items and artifacts, encountering him as a Hollow along the way. According to the game, it has been "fed" with copious amounts of mana, which gave it an ability to kill a person's very soul. Subaru used its ability to kill Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti once and for all.

Trivia[]
- Originally, in the Monthly Comic Alive of Crimson Afterglow Part 3, each of the ten most powerful swords were divided into the three categories of Enchanted Swords, Holy Swords (聖剣, Seiken), and Hexed Blades (妖刀, Yōtō). This was streamlined in The Tale of the Scarlet Princess, in which they were only said to be Enchanted Swords.
- Despite the Dragon Sword Reid exclusively only being able to be wielded by those who have the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint, despite being labelled the first Sword Saint, Reid did not have the aforementioned Divine Protection.
