Stargazers (星詠み, Hoshiyomi) are people in the Sacred Vollachia Empire who have the ability to peer into the future. They exist to preserve Vollachia's continued existence.
Information[]
Vincent Vollachia has said that the purpose of Stargazers are for the wellbeing of Vollachia, not for the emperor themselves.[1] Based on Ubilk's own description,[2] they were able to tell the future from seeing the “stars”, otherwise known as the Observers,[3] metaphysical beings claimed to observe the world from outside and manipulate every living thing. For this reason, Vincent refers to Stargazers as pawns of the Observers.[4] The Stargazers cannot be eliminated, because once a Stargazer is killed, there are countless people who can become new Stargazers, and it is unknown the standard of Observers for choosing new Stargazers. Thus, unless one is able to kill everyone inside Vollachia, it is impossible to eliminate the Stargazers. In addition, the Kingdom of Lugunica's Dragon History Stone has been compared to Vollachia's Stargazers due to their similar purposes.[5]
The knowledge of Stargazers are shared between each other. One such example is how Mariuli knows of songs and knowledge she would not have had the chance to learn of in her village. Another method for them to gain knowledge is through the "stars". As noted by Olbart Dunkelkenn, some Stargazers can be different from one another.[6] Just like the fundamental differences between Taritta and Ubilk, their knowledge is not shared. Currently, it is known that at least 27 Stargazers can coexist at the same time,[7] though with the exception of Ubilk and Cecilus Segmunt, nothing about any of the others in the present are known.
Commandments[]
The Stargazers take their instructions from a commandment (天命, tenmei) passed down to them by the Observers. A commandment is often referred to as fate itself, and is regarded by many as unchangeable fate, and this has been emphasized by Ubilk many times. The method of obtaining commandments is different between Stargazers. For Ubilk, it is mostly through dreams.[8] When a person became a Stargazer, they become completely different people; a puppet that only lives to fulfill their commandment[9][6] until they die. Based on Vincent's knowledge, it's hard for the Stargazers to resist their Commandment, and there will be cases where multiple Stargazers share the same commandment. Fortunately, there is only one Commandment at a time, and no new commandment is passed down before the previous one is fulfilled.[10]
Another thing of note is that the purposes of commandments may not necessarily align with each other, and may even apparently contradict with each other. One example is that the commandment of Mariuli is to kill the "black-haired and black-eyed traveler" to stop the Great Disaster from happening, while the commandment of Ubilk is to kill "Vincent Vollachia" to make the Great Disaster happen and minimize the damage afterwards.
Stargazers in History[]
- Rowan Segmunt was tasked with searching for a way to reach the Heavenly Sword. This resulted in the births and murders of his numerous children, until Cecilus’s birth. Following his birth, Rowan was abandoned by the Observers after being deemed to have completed his commandment by producing Cecilus.
- At some point, Cecilus discovered Vincent Vollachia and decided to serve him. This resulted in him becoming one of Vincent’s most loyal servants, and later, the First of the reinstated Nine Divine Generals system.
- At some point, Ubilk became a Stargazer. With his prophecies, his position was cemented in the Crystal Palace, and his role was critical for quelling numerous disasters and events in Vollachia.
- During his time in the palace, Ubilk informed the emperor of the trigger that would kick off the Great Disaster: the demise of Vincent Vollachia.
- Mariuli Shudrak became a Stargazer in her youth. On her deathbed, she passed on her commandment, to kill the “black-haired and black-eyed traveler”, to Taritta Shudrak in order to prevent the stop the Great Disaster. Because of this, Taritta successfully killed Natsuki Subaru in his first failed loop in Arc 7, which led to Subaru’s eventual meeting with Vincent, and his subsequent involvement with the Imperial Civil War.
- After speaking to Chisha Gold about the signal for the beginning of the commandment regarding the Great Disaster, being the death of "Vincent Vollachia", he unintentionally triggered the start of the Imperial Coup, which would later result in the Imperial Civil War. Likewise, this resulted in Cecilus becoming infantilized, temporarily losing his memory, and being sent to Ginunhive as a gladiator.
- Ubilk appears in Chaosflame and assists Subaru’s and Rui’s escape from the city’s citizens. He later appears in front of Taritta Shudrak and speaks with her, shortly before the shadow burst from the Crimson Lapis Palace, which Ubilk claimed was out of his jurisdiction as it was Lugunica’s problem.
- After Subaru finds himself in Ginunhive, he stumbles onto Cecilus, who later joins Subaru’s Pleiades Battalion on the march towards the Imperial Capital.
- Towards the end of the Battle for the Imperial Capital, Ubilk led Vincent towards the disguised Chisha. Shortly after their meeting, Chisha pushed Vincent out of the way of a lethal attack by the undead Balleroy Temeglyph. With Chisha taking the shot while still transformed into Vincent, the Great Disaster began.
- During the escape from the Imperial Capital, Ubilk reveals that the four major nations have their own disasters: the Empire’s Great Disaster; the Holy Kingdom’s Collapse; the City-States’ Night Weeping; and the Kingdom’s Witch(es).
- During the retreat to Garkla, Ubilk is given a prophecy. He is told that the keys to defeating the Great Disaster are Rui, with her Authority of Gluttony, and Groovy Gumlet, with his knowledge of curses and curse tools. At some point after this, Ubilk, fulfilling his commandment by doing all he could to help end the Great Disaster, loses his position as a Stargazer.

Trivia[]
- Despite being a Stargazer, Cecilus is unable to hear the voices of the Observers. On the contrary, he considers them his “audience”, and he seems to be able to convey his voice to them.
- Ubilk has referred to Subaru as a “Stargazer of the Kingdom”. Likewise, Vincent has also mistaken Subaru as a Stargazer due to the sudden future knowledge he obtained via his Authority.
- The term gazer (詠み人, yomibito) has been used as a substitute for “Stargazer”. In Iris and the King of Thorns, Whitaker Goldario is described as a gazer in the story's narration, and in Sword Demon Battle Ballad, Stride Vollachia voiced that the Observers were averse to a gazer deviating from their commandment,[11] implying that he was not adhering to his own commandment.
- In Arc 4, when Echidna first mentions the names and sins of the other Witches, she mentions that the Witch of Gluttony, Daphne, created “beasts in defiance of her commandment to save the world from starvation”.[12] Presently, it is unknown whether this is in relation to the Stargazers, Observers, and commandments.
