Re:Zero Wiki

Tappei Nagatsuki really seems to like his astronomy, since everyone related to the witches, or thought to be connected, at this point has a name referring to a constellation. For the Archbishops, their powers sometimes tend to deal with the classical mythology surrounding the stars. Starting from Arc 6, this is increasingly becoming a plot point, since Flugel's tower references astronomy lore that only someone from Subaru's world would understand. What does that mean for the future? Well I guess only the author and editor know right now.

So why not, me as a fan, write down everything and leave it to you guys for more speculation. Some of these constellations, I have no idea what they represent. I'll leave the Witches of Sin and Subaru for a future discussion since their symbolism is much more complected than everyone else.

  • Ley's last name is also the traditional name for the star Zeta Ceti, which is apart of the constellation Cetus. Cetus can symbolize either a whale or shark constellation, which connects to how Ley calls the Hakugei his pet.
  • Regulus is a reference to the star Regulus, which is the brightest star in the Leo constellation. Kinda fitting, for a guy with an ability called Lion's Heart.
  • Petelguese....Ah Mr. Diligence, you are a handful. You have a connection with Emilia, and a mysterious past with Flugel that has yet to be revealed. Heck, even the spelling of your name is a plot point. If spelled Betelgeuse, then it refers to a star in the Orion constellation. It should be located close to where the hand is. Unseen hand anyone? In classical mythology, Orion died because of a scorpion sting sent by Apollo. To add insult to injury, Apollo made the scorpion into a constellation in order to tormet Orion for all of eternity. And someone else later this list has a connection to the scorpion...

Here's the, "I don't know how this relates to their powers" group.

  • Roy's last name is a reference to the star Alphard, which is the brightest star in the Hydra Constellation.
  • Louis's last name is also another name for the star Alpha Leporis, which is the brightest star in the Lepus constellation. Lepus is most often represented as a rabbit being hunted by Orion. Does that mean he has a connection with Petelguese? Who knows?
  • Sirius's namesake comes from the star Sirius, which is part of the Canis Major constellation and also the brightest star in the Earth's night sky. A dog motif for a person who uses chains...Yeah, I have no clue on this one.
  • Capella Emerada Lugnica....she by far is the one that grabs my interest the most. She can transform, and shares the same name as Emerada Lugnica, who was a former princess of the kingdom. Capella, which is the brightest star in the Auriga constellation, represents the Charioteer. Given the possible themes for the chariot, I'm kinda curious on how this one will go.

Here's the, "not part of the witch cult" group, but might possibly be connected.

  • Al's full name Aldebaran is the brightest star in the Taurus constellation.
  • Shaula, also known as Lambda Scorpii, is the second-brightest star in the southern constellation Scorpius. In Arabic, Shaula means stinger, which also refers to the star's position on the Scorpius constellation. Food for though, both Petelguese and Shaula know Flugel....hmmmm

Just for fun

  • Both of Subaru and Rem's non canon children also have a reference to the stars.
  • Subaru's son Rigel was originally intended to be name Vega, from Lyra Constellation. But instead of becoming a hawk, Subaru named his son after a star in the same constellation as Petelguese. Fun fact, Orion's brightest stars are Rigel (Beta Orionis) and Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis). There should be some cruel irony here.
  • Meanwhile, their daughter Spica is named after a star in the constellation of Virgo.
